What exactly is the use of web controller over desktop application?in which case can it be preferred over controller? what is the wow factor here?

Desktop controller can be used to run only one test by one user at a particular instance. Where as performance centre can be used by multiple testers to execute multiple tests using different combination of load generators ( kind of distributed environment)

I am not asking about performance centre.. I want to know about new web controller available in LR v12.02

Web Controller is the NEW complete rewrite of the standard LR and PC scenario launcher/controller It's HTML 5 based and works very well. It will be new standard interface in forthcoming versions of the product. Oh and no more dependency on .Net, C and C++ runtimes, etc!

The new web controller is much more scalable (supporting more vUsers) and as it develops HP will put more and more features in until it reaches feature-parity with the old desktop controller software. In the long term as Petar says, it'll replace the old controller.

The Web Controller is intended to be a preview of where we're going with the product(s). It is a complete rewrite and re-architecture of the platform, is highly scalable, and intended to be more in line with modern development and testing practices; such as a REST API for integration with external tools. For an even better view of where we're going with the products, check out StormRunner Load at saas.hp.com. This platform is based on the same technology, and has been tested at well over 1.5 million virtual users. Evaluation is free.
